HORSEFLY RIVER

Salmon Runs, Trophy Trout, and Seasonal Perfection

The Horsefly River is one of British Columbia’s most iconic salmon rivers and a magnet for truly large trout.

Flowing into Quesnel Lake, it plays a critical role in the region’s ecosystem, supporting massive sockeye runs that fuel explosive fishing opportunities for rainbow and bull trout.

During summer months, the Horsefly offers rewarding dry fly fishing, with trout feeding confidently in runs, seams, and softer water. It’s an ideal time for anglers who enjoy visual takes, technical presentations, and classic river fishing.

As fall arrives, the river comes alive. Sockeye salmon return in huge numbers, and the Horsefly becomes a feeding corridor for big rainbows and bull trout moving in from Quesnel Lake. Egg patterns, streamers, and flesh flies become highly effective as trout gorge on drifting eggs and the remains of spawned-out salmon. This is when the Horsefly earns its reputation—fish are aggressive, powerful, and often trophy-sized.
